How can we help?
Answers to common questions, and a real person if you need one.
Email support
Write to [email protected]. Tell us your phone model, the app version (Account screen), your Audiobookshelf server version and what happened. We usually reply within two business days.
Privacy first
We never need your server password to help you. Please do not send it. See the privacy policy for what the app stores and where.
What is Audiobookshelf?
Audiobookshelf is a free, open source server you run yourself, on a home server, a NAS like Unraid or Synology, or a cloud machine. You point it at your folders of audiobooks and ebooks and it organizes them, fetches covers and details, and keeps track of everyone's progress.
NoBookEnds is an app that connects to that server. It does not include any books. The books are yours, on your server. Audiobookshelf is an independent project and NoBookEnds is not affiliated with it.
Do not have a server yet? The Audiobookshelf documentation covers installing it with Docker and on most NAS systems.
How to connect
Find your server address
It is the address you use for Audiobookshelf in a browser, for example https://books.example.com or http://192.168.1.20:13378 on your home network.
Open NoBookEnds and enter it
Type the address on the sign-in screen. Include http:// or https:// and the port if your server uses one.
Use your Audiobookshelf username and password, or paste an API key (Audiobookshelf 2.26 or newer, created in the server's settings).
Start listening
Your libraries appear right away. Pick a book and press play, or open the ebook to read.
Away from home? A 192.168.x.x address only works on your home Wi-Fi. To listen anywhere, make your server reachable from the internet (for example through a reverse proxy with HTTPS) or connect to your home network with a VPN such as Tailscale or WireGuard.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
"Could not reach the server"
- Open the same address in your phone's browser. If it does not load there, the app cannot reach it either.
- Check the scheme and port:
http://andhttps://are different, and the default Audiobookshelf port is 13378 unless you changed it. - Local addresses only work on the same network. Off Wi-Fi, use your public address or a VPN.
- If you use a reverse proxy with HTTPS, check that its certificate is valid. Self-signed certificates are not trusted by phones by default.
"Invalid username or password"
Sign in to the Audiobookshelf web app with the same details to confirm them. If your server uses single sign-on (OpenID), create an API key in Audiobookshelf and sign in with that instead.
Playback stops when the screen locks
NoBookEnds plays in the background on both platforms. On Android, some phones put apps to sleep aggressively: set NoBookEnds to "Unrestricted" in the battery settings for the app. On iPhone, make sure Background App Refresh and cellular data are allowed for NoBookEnds if you stream away from Wi-Fi.
My progress is not syncing
Progress is saved to your server as you listen and read. If you were offline, it is queued and sent when the app reconnects. Pull down to refresh the home screen. If another device shows a different position, the most recent change wins.
An ebook will not open
The reader supports EPUB files. Other ebook formats stored in Audiobookshelf are not supported in the reader yet. If an EPUB fails to open, try opening it in the Audiobookshelf web reader; if it fails there too, the file itself may be damaged.
The audiobook and ebook show as separate books
NoBookEnds matches formats by ISBN, then ASIN, then title and author. Adding the same ISBN or ASIN to both items in Audiobookshelf, or fixing small differences in the title or author name, will bring them together.
Downloads are not available
Offline downloads are part of Premium. Your Audiobookshelf user also needs the download permission, which a server admin can turn on in the server's user settings.
Can I use HTTP instead of HTTPS?
Yes, so you can connect on your home network, but traffic over plain HTTP is not encrypted. Use HTTPS whenever your server is reachable from the internet.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open the Account screen and choose Restore Purchases while signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with.
How do I remove my data?
Remove a server from the Account screen to delete its sign-in, downloads and saved state from your phone, or delete the app to remove everything. See the privacy policy for purchase records.
